Rejected at 29 medical schools Blackwell was accepted in 1847 at Geneva College in western New Yourk, and graduated with highest honors. Even so she was unable to find a hospitol that would except her credentials. To continue her studies she was treating in a clinic for the poor. Eventualy, she lost the sight in her left eye and it had to be removed. Returning to New York shd and her sister who also became a doctor, opened a hospital for women and children. During the Civil War which was the bloodiest deadliest war in America's histry they trained nurses for the Union Army.
