What is the BEST way to learn Spanish?
I am a medical provider in northeastern IL in a town that is now 60% Hispanic (which I absolutely support and applaud--I can't even fathom the hardships and hurdles these folks have overcome!). I, however, am a typical German-Swiss WI guy who knows NO Spanish. Thankfully, the majority of our nursing staff is Hispanic and bilingual. So, my question....what is the best way to learn Spanish? A night class? I've heard of this Rosetta something, maybe that? Books? Tapes? I really want to be able to communicate more effectively with this patient population and yes, there are those people who haven't learned English. But that's not for me to judge. So no smart*** answers, please. Its a serious question.

Spend a year or 2 in Mexico or other Spanish speaking country.

the Instituto cervantes, leading Spanish teaching institution offers an online course, with a tutor, if lack of time is an issue. You could also find some friends to practice it.

I think u need a spanish teacher who also knows english and may help u learn spanish but i tell u its hard to learn any other language .

since u work with so many people that know spanish learn from them because u might learn a word in spanish that might be slang for something else and then they will think u r crazy..also yea u could do tapes and all but review it with someone who knows the language..

Well, I've heard that the Rosetta stone program for PC is relatively quick however, everyone is different and like other people said, spending time in Mexico and learning it that way may help you learn it faster. Rosetta stone is famed for speed learning so it all depends on how you want to do it.

I suggest you do some local research to find the right kind of tuition. There's nothing like a good, qualified teacher to be able to understand how a language works and learn to communicate. Once you've done your research, always ask to attend one class for free and see for yourself if what's advertised or promised is Truly carried out in the classroom. If you decide you'd rather use some other kind of course, say, online, or CDs, make sure you can organise your own time and are able of setting your own rhythm.

I know some people who have used Rosetta Stone and love it. Some community colleges offer a medical spanish class. I have taken one of those and thought that it helped immensely. You learn focused vocabulary that you never learn in normal Spanish classes. The absolute BEST option would be to go to Mexico for a summer. You learn SO much more when you are actually immersed in the culture. However you decide to learn though, be sure that you practice around those you work with. They can help you out and you learn faster! Patients will also really appreciate any attempt (no matter how feeble) on your part to communicate in their language!

Hi, First of all, I think it's great that you have a desire to learn Spanish so you can better serve the Hispanic population in your town. I suggest that you check into what classes are offered at a community college near you. Online courses are helpful, but generally lack the human feedback that you would get from a classroom situation. I get annoyed with PETA because they go overboard. In fact, I used to get their mailings, and after requesting, several times, to be removed from their list, to no avail, I proceeded to send them a thick packet (in their self-addressed postage pre-paid envelope), a ton of recipes, including roast, leg of lamb, fried chicken...you get the idea. They never contacted me again, fortunately. I would not want to buy ice cream with human breast milk in it. I think that's grose, but then, I also think cow's milk is grose. After I got over the initial shock, I laughed out loud because this is preposterous! Seriously, are they going to have "wet nurse" (slaves or other women who nursed the owner's/employer's child) farms or labs? Yes I had heard about this. it is insane! These people are insane. First they would have to find women to volunteer, and they would need to find ALOT, we produce just enough for our babies. I see slavery coming out of this and who in their right mind would buy something like this. Dr Spock- the leading expert on child care? Yeah maybe some people think that way. I think the people at PETA really need to get a clue and do some research. How do they know breast milk really is healthier? There could be a reason that only babies use breast milk. I wonder if it is not good for adult consumption. Cow milk has been used for human consumption forever, I doubt it really is that bad. We know that it is bad for infant consumption, but after the child is a year or so, it is fine. It is my belief that animals were put here for a purpose and that Humans were put here for a higher purpose. When we place animal life as more important than human life we offend God.

Who takes PETA seriously anyway? These are terrorists who throw blood on people for wearing fur and throw rocks at children who fish. According to PETA "owning or possessing" animals for pets is wrong, Owning a pure bred pet is worse as that was unnatural breeding. They believe all animals should be allowed to free roam and breed at will. The believe you should not spay or neuter any animals. I would suggest members of PETA should be spayed or neutered except that really isn't necessary because the males are already psychologically neutered by the alpha-bitches.

Can You Think Of Any Social Things To Do
Can You Think Of Any Social Things To Do?
I asked a similar question in another category and got two whole answers. So. I wont go into why but I have zero friends where I live. So I need to find social things I can do, like groups I could join or things I could volunteer at or whatnot where I could meet people in a social setting. Some disclaimers, it can't cost a ton. I live in Kentucky not Manhattan. I want things that DONT involve discussing Agatha Christie with the old ladies at the library or helping the old folks gum their swiss steaks to death at the nursing home. I love and respect old people but I cant seeing bringing 5 90 year old dudes home to play CODMW2. Any suggestions You got, bring it. I asked it here so I'd get more than 2 answers. I'm sure this is going to be a very unoriginal answer for this section but my vote goes to concerts. Try local shows because those are way more personal and I'm sure there are all different genres around so you could meet whoever you want. Good luck dude!

You could always follow in my Footsteps, as self indulging as that advice may seem.... I volunteer on a regular basis in Homeless Shelters, Soup Kitchens and in Charitable organizations like The Red Cross and The Salvation Army... I go there as often as I can and do whatever is required of me, I go to these places with no expectations and no plans..Not only does it eat up time, but it makes one feel needed, and at the sametime makes one feel like they're helping those who need it more then ourselves.... i don't know about your religious affiliation or anything, but going to a youth group at a church can help you to meet people of your age in your area. granted you will have a lot of people trying to preach at you, but it's not always preachy. depends on the church i guess volunteer at food banks, hospitals, red cross...etc. maybe also look into something related to your intrests. you may find a recording studio, or a theater or something that you could volunteer with to meet people that are into the same things that you. i'd start with your intrests and call places and say you want to volunteer. you may even work a job out of it and start making some money. money can buy friends. being in kentucky you will be limited. you may have to just start hanging out at bowling allies checking out high school girls. it worked for wooderson in dazed and confused.

If you play an instrument check out craigslist ads for bands looking for members.

Isn't golf the in thing for white men to do? You should learn to golf well and "accidentally" run into some cool looking people on a course.

Volunteering always works! Help out at a place where you can meet people with similar interests who are also helping. Or, pick up a fun paying job. Something that you'd do for fun, not for money. Make sure you love what you're doing, and if you're happy, then others will be too, and you can branch out and get to know them better. Also, *please don't laugh at this*, there's always local sports teams, like adult leagues, which are totally non-competitive. (Again, I don't know if you have a local rec center or something like that). EDIT BECAUSE I JUST CAME UP WITH SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!! You like music, right?Well.. of course :) Work at a MUSIC STORE! (or a record store... you get what I mean.) And enlighten people with better music than Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber!

Adam stole my answer. I agree though, you should definitely hit up some concerts/local shows. I've made a few friends at concerts and you'd more than likely be around people who share some of the same interests. If I could, I'd fly to Kentucky right now, give you a big hug (granted you're not like over six feet tall, I'm just a measly 5'8) and than say something along the lines of "Come on let's go find a shopping cart and see what we can't come up with" :D BA: I can't think of a single song about volunteers, so instead I'm just gonna give you a song I've been listening to nonstop today, and it's Japanese so have fun with that :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C6wYerMEmw
