If the UK is right-wing, why does it have such a comprehensive health care system?
The UK government owns every bit of the health care system, nothing is private. It owns the hospitals, it owns the ambulance services, all the nurses, doctors, paramedics, ward staff are all government employees. There is pretty much no privatization anywhere in the NHS system. This is in contrast to Japan, Switzerland and Canada where most of their hospitals and doctors are private, and the government just subsidize the cost, rather than actually owning the system itself. The UK government covers 82% of health care costs, whereas in Canada only 69% of the costs are covered, and in Australia 67% of the costs are covered. The UK system seems to be the ultimate socalist system. Nothing right-wing about it.

That's the idea (and problem) of the NHS. The public own everything. Unfortunately this is often just an excuse to employ millions of paper pushers who really don't fill any function other than to be expensive office-fillers, creating bureaucracy for each other. The idea of it was to create a state-owned healthcare provider whose services would be free at the point of need, so you don't get a scene like you get in American hospitals when people with their guts spilling out all over the place are searching for their credit cards or are on the phone to their bank manager frantically re-mortgaging their house. That's not to say that there isn't private healthcare in the UK. Ironically one of the largest private healthcare organisations in the world, BUPA, is very prevalent in the healthcare industry. And you can't take the NHS as being the bellwether for the British nation in general. Within the market capitalist economy and the shrinking state, the NHS is something of an anachronism nowadays.

Who said the States was the best in the West
Who said the States was the best in the West?
My and the wife and 5 other buddies are leaving the United States. I have many in demand skills that are needed everywhere especially in the States. I've got my degree in business, I.T., and Sociology. My wife is a Registered Nurse. Some of my friends that are leaving are 2 Medical Doctors, 1 Dentist, 1 Accountant, and 1 other Registered Nurse. We are very close friends and we've all reached a consensus that that United States won't be such a great place to call home in the future. It could not be more blatantly obvious the the Quality of life in the U.S. is failing while other countries are improving. My and the wife are moving to Sweden. My friends are going to Canada, Australia, and Switzerland. Most of them already have job offers and they will all be making more money with their new jobs. My question is, isn't it sad that the U.S. is failing it's own people in promising the land of Milk & Honey which it so obviously lacks? Isn’t it sad; the direction in which the U.S. is heading? So much social disorder. So much poverty. No quality healthcare for the general public at large. No retirement. No social security. All with homelessness and obesity becoming such an epidemic. And there is no relief. No help from the government. The rich continue to exploit the poor. The poor are held down with no room for advancement. There is no end in sight for how ugly the future looks for the United States. Is anyone out there even concerned about this? What can be done to stop the downward trend of the U.S. And with so many professionals ditching the States. How could the States remain competitive worldwide? Inflation is becoming a huge problem in the U.S. The cost of living continues to climb each year while the income remains the same. Also there are more imports than exports. More money if flowing OUT of the States rather than IN right now. The U.S. borrowed billions of dollars from China and still has no way to pay it back. All while the National Deficit continues to soar ever higher. More than 3 trillion right now. Ever heard the saying "The bigger they are, the harder they fall"? Well soon enough the U.S. will start crashing down. And great will be it's fall.

This isn't an answer, because of course i can say, sure it's sad. but 1st. the milk and honey promise was only made to Israel by God. 2nd, who are "so many professionals". I'm a professional, I have my Masters in psych and working on my Ph.D, and I'm not leaving. I work mostly with MDs and other Ph.Ds and none of them are leaving. Yes there are some countries that do other things well. I hear Germany is very nice. France is out. England and surrounding are mildly interesting. The middle east is going down the tubes fast. China and Russia are no campgrounds. Canada is great i hear too. Every country has it's poor, rich and social injustices. Instead of leaving, maybe try to make your own little nitch a better place. if everyone does that then there would be no reason to leave. The government isn't the answer to all your problems. We are the answer to many of our problems. Good luck anyway.

How can i get a job with the Unitied Nations (UN)
How can i get a job with the Unitied Nations (UN)?
I am an Australian girl studying nursing, and i am applying for the Australian army as a nurse. But is this enough experience to get a job at the World Health organisation (WHO). I speak english fluently, and an intermediate level of french (as i lived in switzerland for 6 months). Really what i want to know is; what kind of a job i can get am i doing the right things towards getting that job and how i eventually go about applying for it! it would really help if i could get some idea, this is my life long dream and now im old enough to make it happen! Thanks. RB

Try UN Volunteers (UNV) and work as a volunteer for a short spell first. Then once you're on the inside, see what's available. Might be easier that way, because you'll already have a "first experience."

I want to immigrate to Europe and denounce my American citizenship. How I do this
I want to immigrate to Europe and denounce my American citizenship. How I do this?
I want to leave America and head for life else where, but before I do this, I want to work abroad and shop for a country that suits me before settling in. My main concern is making a living. I am currently qualified in the state of OH as a nurse's aid and a truck driver. I was wondering if my current US endorsements would be accepted in the country I want to work in, be transferable or would I have to go through the course all over again to get it and is it a big pain to get the work visas and how do I get them? I am planning to work in either the U.K or Ireland for awhile and eventually move to Switzerland and claiming citizenship there or go to Switzerland directly, live there awhile and then claim citizenship. My reasons for this are my own and if you do not have any useful insight or claim me as unpatriatic as an exscuse to be rude, then I kindly ask of you not to answer. For those with good advice, thank you in advance. Please note I did ask kindly for rude replies not to be posted. Many such responses have been and therefore their comments have been flagged and removed. I do not want to join a foriegn legion. I don't think I'd want to fight for a country to gain its citizenship to find out its a country I rather not live in. Also, fighting in a foriegn armed service is a quick way to renounce my US citizenship. Not a good idea for the previous stated reason. One more day and I will close this question for it seems I am getting no more replies.

Wish I could go with you. From what I understand it is very difficult to get work in any european country unless you are a citizen. You would be a dishwasher or have a menial position. It is difficult to get citizenship as well. Europe is the new America.

It is not necessary to denounce your American citizenship to live overseas. Just do it.

Just a cautionary note. Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be a hard place to get accepted by the people that live there, unless you have their genes. I know cuz I tried to move to Austria, but unless you knew the language or had some Austrian in your blood, you were always an outsider. Same experience in Germany. Others I have talked to said they encountered the same problems in Switzerland. Sorry for the not so great news, but I thought I should let you know. I was born in Europe, but am now living in Canada.

Truck driver might not work out so well since they drive on the opposite side of the road in the UK. That takes a LOT of getting used to. To make matters worse, better than half of the roads in the UK are one lane so you have to be ultra careful. Also, housing costs are sky high. What we would consider an average house costs $1,000,000 or more because of the currency exchange rate. I don't know anything about nursing transferability, sorry. Remember, there ARE 49 other states in the US, all different in many ways, but alike in the ways of use to you. Good luck.

In most cases you have to: 1. have a family member or job to sponsor you 2. marry someone from that country 3. have lived and worked there for a certain amount of time In order to get a job there you will need to apply for a work visa (just like US laws). I have a friend that is a logger. The Logging co. he worked for is located here in the Pacific Northwest, but in the 90's when the logging industry was hit so hard, they bid on a job in New Zealand, and got it. My friend and others of the crew obtained work visas, however they were only good for three years max! For some of the guys, the job wasn't finished before the visa's ran out and even though the owner of the co. tried to get extensions for them, they couldn't stay. I think you'll find that some of these other countries don't have a Lady Liberty greeting immigrants and don't WANT one. Maybe you could consider Alaska or Hawaii? Far away but still part of the USA. Might be better than waking up some day to find out you are not only without a job, but also without a country! Bon Voyage!

Ever wonder why Canada has the highest immigration rate in the world? Because it's the easiest country in the world to find a job (not a mcjob, BTW) But, seriously if not used to asians, don't come to vancouver, 30% of them are chinamen's.

Renunciation is a legal process that does have certain prerequisites. Quite frankly, if you do not value your American citizenship, I'm glad you're going -- better for you, better for the rest of us. Many others should join you. I doubt the Swiss will EVER let you just show up and live there, unless you marry a Swiss citizen. You'll likely have better luck in an Eastern European country, such as Poland -- they are experiencing severe shortages of certain types of workers. Good luck in your new life, though having heard this many times before, no offense, but I'm sure you won't follow through. One of the best ways to learn to love your country is to actually go and live overseas to see just what we have. If you ARE serious, then contact the consular sections of different countries in Europe that interest you, and ask them how it's done. As for Europe being the "new America", as someone said, well, that's just a joke. India or Brazil has a better chance at claiming that title than anywhere in Europe.

Join the Foreign Legion? Anyhow...I do not think you can 'claim' citizenship in another country [otherwise we wouldnt have such an immigration prob here lol], you have to apply for it, stating a good reason- according to their standards.

I believe you will need to go to an american embassy while in another country to renounce your citizenship. I would save money in order to have enough to deal with a mafia entity if you need to buy a wife (depending on where you are). I would go to Amsterdam and enjoy the weed. Wish I could go to as I am a socalist living in this capitalist nation.
